Since the early 80's Vienna has developed - together with London and New York - into one of the three "Capitals of the Musical". Many successful productions were brought on the stage of the "Theater an der Wien", the "Raimundtheater" and the "Ronacher".

Among others, "Cats", "The Phantom of the Opera", "Les Misérables", "The Rocky Horror Show", "Grease", "The Kiss of the Spider Woman" oder "Beauty and the Beast" could be seen in Vienna. But also self-productions celebrated their world première. These were written especially about Austrian celebrities, such as the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud ("Freudiana") or Empress Sissi ("Elisabeth" - the most successful German language musical in the world).

Since December 1999 the newest production of the "United Stages of Vienna" has been running in the "Theater an der Wien": "Mozart!" ist the story of the composer's life, beginning with his childhood as an overcoached wunderkind, telling from the glamorous career and ending with his tragigal early death, moneyless and forgotten. Mozart is driven by the love-hate relationship to his father and walks on the thin edge between his musical genius and his decadent way of living. We see the places passing by, where he created his music, and hear the story of his great love, Constanze Weber. All told, a wonderful musical honouring a great composer.
