Azucar Moreno

'Azucar Moreno' is a duo of the gipsy sisters Toñi and Encarna Salazar. Their career started in 1982 when they were asked to perform as the backing singers of their brothers' group, Los Chunguitos. Then in 1984 they released their first album "Con la miel en los labios" (With honey on the lips) which included their first hit "Debajo del olivo" (Under the olive tree). But the turning-point in their career came with their song "Bandido" which represented Spain in the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest (ending up 5th). This song became a huge hit in Spain and helped them conquer the European markets. After "Bandido", all their albums went platinum and increased their popularity in Spain and abroad.

The year 2000 is a triumphant one for Azucar Moreno. They released their 10th album and took an active part in the film "Gitano" (Gipsy), featuring Spanish dancer Joaquin Cortés and French top-model Laetitia Casta, which will be released this autumn. The two sisters did not only take part in the original music soundtrack but also started their acting career: in a scene of the film, they play the part of two gipsy girls singing "Abracadabra", one of the songs included on their new album.

Azucar Moreno's music can be described as a mixture of flamenco and pop music and their greatest skill is to achieve a subtle compromise between the rhythm and the melody-line. Not to mention their fabulous and sensual stage presence (all ESC fans remember their 1990 ESC act as one of the best ever in the history of the ESC).
